| Far away from interstate highways and air traffic, this city of 10,000 retains a home town charm as a dividend of its seclusion. Click on the photos on this website to see a few of the nearly 600 historic buildings and locations here and in our river island wilderness. In the middle of the Wild and Scenic Allegheny River, Warren was once home to more than a dozen oil refineries. Today, only United Refining remains as seen at the white storage tanks in the middle of this photo. Founded in 1902 right at the end of the Victorian Period (1837-1901), it is one of the oldest refineries in the nation and was one of the first U.S. businesses to achieve 100 percent energy independence. It buys only North American crude oil. The area is currently undergoing intense development of its timber and oil resources. Six miles away from Warren, construction of the Kinzua Dam 40 years ago stopped the yearly flooding and created one of the nation's best flat-water canoeing rivers and the best fishing in the state.
